Questions to Consider in a New Relationship
Explore expectations, pace, communication, and boundaries without turning a checklist into a prediction.

Allow room for uncertainty
Getting to know someone involves incomplete information. A list of “red flags” cannot determine whether a relationship will succeed or whether someone is trustworthy. It can be more useful to notice what has been discussed, what remains unclear, and whether the pace leaves room for your own decisions.
Talk about expectations
Consider which questions are relevant now: Are you both looking for the same type of relationship? What does exclusivity mean to each of you? How often would you like to communicate? You do not need an agreement about every future possibility, but meaningful differences deserve a conversation.
Look at boundaries in context
Think about how each person responds to a request for time, privacy, or a different plan. A single misunderstanding may call for clarification. A repeated pattern of disregard may affect what you choose to continue. Neither observation gives you a reliable way to read someone’s mind.
Keep your wider life in view
Consider how the relationship fits with existing responsibilities, friendships, and personal interests. Decide what information you are comfortable sharing and when. There is no universal timetable for emotional closeness, introducing family, or making a commitment.
Decide on the next question
Write down one thing you know, one assumption, and one question you would like to ask. This separates curiosity from a verdict about the other person. If a question involves health, legal obligations, or safety, seek appropriately qualified help. You can slow down or step away without first proving that someone has bad intentions; your preferences and boundaries matter in their own right.
